NJ Ballard began her watercolor training in 2006 under the professional guidance of Mary L. Harden at Strybing Arboretum. She was awarded the status of Master Artist of Botanical Illustration with the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society and the Strybing Arboretum. This afforded her the privilege of studying plant materials growing in the Gardens, adding an array of possibilities to her repertoire.

As a  co-owner/curator of ME Art Gallery in San Francisco  with Kelly Ann Gilson Lyman, she founded Black Tie Botanicals, an organization she created with Mary L. Harden, in an effort to raise consciousness about the fragility of our ecosystem through educational exhibits.  With persistent observation, even ordinary plants remind us of their amazing, intricate and essential place in our universe. Artist and observer often connect with a spirituality frequently neglected or taken for granted in our busy world. Nancy shares this information in her work, perhaps overstating the obvious with her love of color and her flair for design.

She continues to study and work with the Master Artists at the Mary L. Harden School of Botanical Illustration in San Francisco, CA.

For many years she was a frequent and popular contributing artists for the Escabon Sabar Gallery in Oakland, CA. Her exhibits in the San Francisco Bay Area included many wineries in the Napa Mendocino Area of California and the ME Gallery in San Francisco. She is recognized for her vivid use of color and powerful, often simulating perspective.
